This week, we discuss CRISPR a genetic manipulation technology that is taking the scientific community by storm and bringing up significant ethical and spiritual questions. We believe this is a topic Christians needs to be talking about and so this is our attempt at explaining this revolutionary technology and starting to work through how Christians should think and talk about it.
If you want to hear more on this topic, Alex spoke about CRISPR on the Tech Reformation Podcast episode 26 a few weeks ago. You can listen to that episode here (http://www.techreformation.com/tr026/).
You can also hear Albert Mohler discuss CRISPR on The Briefing. He does an excellent job explaining why Christians should care about the ethics of this technology (http://www.albertmohler.com/2015/08/21/the-briefing-08-21-15/).
The Economist has written two excellent articles on CRISPR that are worth your time.
- First “The Age of the Red Pen” is a long-form article that takes awhile to get through but really dives deep into the technology and the secular world’s understanding of the ethics involved (http://www.economist.com/news/briefing/21661799-it-now-easy-edit-genomes-plants-animals-and-humans-age-red-pen).
- Their second article, “Editing Humanity“, is much shorter, but hits many of the same major points. If you feel intimidated by long-form articles or just don’t want to spend 20 minutes reading one, you should read this one (http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21661651-new-technique-manipulating-genes-holds-great-promisebut-rules-are-needed-govern-its?fsrc=scn/tw/te/pe/ed/editinghumanity).
